I dress in traditional attire displaying the lively colors of the Latin and Andean world. I introduce audiences to several rhythms of the region by playing a wide variety of folkloric instruments.
The presentation incorporates an overview of history, geography, culture and interesting facts about South and Latin America while delighting audiences with the interpretations of many authentic Andean songs.
The performance is divided into four parts and extends for about 45 minutes. The first part is dedicated to Latin American history, geography and culture and is interspersed with songs and dance. The second part is a photo slide show presentation about the indigenous culture of the Andes while background music creates a beautiful ambience. The third is an informal discussion about the many varied instruments that I play on stage. At the end of the performance I have an active period of music when I encourage people to dance and volunteers are picked from the audience to play some percussion instruments like "El Bombo" the drum, the goat nail percussive "Chajchas", flutes and rain sticks. I follow up by taking questions from the audience and going over anything that was not well understood or any special questions anyone may have. This interactive period usually indicates the level of interest that I evoke in the public. On completion of the performance children and adults have the chance to see all the instruments up close before leaving. Throughout the program, I call upon the audience to fulfill its role in these truly participatory Andean traditions.
